Opus Bonum / Khavn de la Cruz Award / 2006

02.10.2006

This year International Documentary Film Festival Jihlava will announce a new competition for the best international documentary film. A triad of competitions mapping the best Czech, Central European and international films will thus be formed.

An exceptional jury will be established for the new competition: it will have a single jury member. Always a significant and provocative filmmaker, neither compromises nor jury politics. This year it will be the Philippine Khavn de la Cruz (*1972), whose works will be presented in the Translucent Beings section.

Khavn's Manila-based production company Filmless Film is an original reaction to Dogma 95. The company focuses on the shooting of feature-length films made solely with digital technologies and tries to promote and defend such technologies in the Philippines as much as possible .

He is an author of several manifests promoting, above all, semi-amateurish video filmmaking without star cast (when unsure whether to trust an actor use lie-detector) and with a minimum crew. These features give chance of quality films even to the Third World countries such as Philippines. He himself made eleven short and fourteen feature-length films, often controversial. Some of them were edited directly in the camera by the "Pause" button, others are diaries.

The festival will introduce his Kamias: Memory of Forgetting, Bahag Kings, Our Daily Bread and two series of his short "Be Movies".
